SUICIDE PREVENTION CAMPAIGN

I wish to raise awareness of (what appears to be) a massive and alarming 'black hole' in suicide prevention worldwide...

Local 24 hour Respite Sanctuaries

  • There is a demonstrable need for such local community based, suicide respite structures which are open 24 hours a day. Click on MAYTREE below.
  • These structures being capable of maintaining small, supportive, confidential, communities in non-institutional, safe environments.
  • These are urgently needed to provide safe havens to individuals undergoing a suicidal crisis.
  • In all probability, these 'safe havens' will need to be provided by the public, maintained by volunteers and operated outside of Professional Mental Health structures.

These safe havens need to be established to enable people experiencing a suicidal crisis to explore their experiences. To share their thoughts and vent their feelings in a 'safe place'. To gain emotional support - by giving emotional support. Providing anyone at risk with a safe, non-institutional, non-therapuetic, non-judgemental environment in which to reconnect themselves with others in an informal, friendly, relaxed and supportive atmosphere of rest and respite.

Such sanctuaries would not provide guests with treatment, medication, programme, agenda, mental health professionals, psychotherapy, professional counselling, psychiatrists, social workers, priests etc. Simply a non-threatening alternative to those of us in a suicidal crisis. An option to suicide.

Crisis resolution would be achieved by reconnecting ourselves with others; and re-discovering our self-appreciation and self-esteem, which are crucial elements in surviving a  "to be or not to be" crisis.

The respite philosophy is to replace  isolation, despair and an overwhelming desire "not to be": With acceptance, friendship, support, compassion and re-establishing the essential "will to be".

The MAYTREE model

Based in North London is the MAYTREE respite centre for individuals undergoing a suicidal crisis. The very existence of this magnificent centre confirms and underlines the universal need for more such respites. We urgently need more centres like MAYTREE. Please click below to enter.
